University of Illinois Events: International Jazz Day

The UNESCO Center for Global Citizenship (UCGC) is pleased to announce free events in celebration of International Jazz Day.

The Champaign -Urbana celebrations are scheduled for Tuesday, April 29th, starting with a “Film Jazz Fantasy” at the Art Theater (126 W. Church, Champaign) with short films featuring Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith at 5:00 pm, followed by live music at the Esquire Lounge (106 N. Walnut, Champaign) by the Traditional Jazz Orchestra at 7:00 pm

These events are sponsored by the UNESCO Center for Global Citizenship, Sousa Archives & Center for American Music at the University of Illinois and the Conservatory of Central Illinois – and through support from the Center for Global Studies at the University of Illinois and other donors.

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz in its role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.
